In years gone by I used to worry about the cost of the Christmas period. The presents, nights out, as well as the travel costs of visiting friends and family, no wonder some people like to save up for months. Christmas is expensive!

Or I thought it was, until I compared it to summer. Christmas is quite intense, spread over just one week or less. Summer goes on for months, and so does the spending!

A few years ago it finally dawned on me that summer was by far the most expensive time of year for us, and since then I have been thinking of as many ways to save as possible.

Most of my money saving tips are really easy ways to save money, they just involve a bit planning.

For example I always have a list of free or cheap family events or activities. Also, if I book any travel, I have systems to ensure that I get the best possible deals for hotel and for flights.

I’ve saved thousands of pounds over the years just by checking various website to get the cheapest price – for the same holiday!

If at this point you are thinking, why does she care about saving money? Well for me the answer is simple.

Any money saved, means less money that I have to earn. And if I need to earn less, I get more free time to do the things that I love.  That’s why I spend as much time saving money as trying to earn extra money.

Whatever your reason for wanting some creative ways to save money. Whether it’s because you are in debt or because you’re saving for a special purchase such as a house or an exotic holiday, believe making an effort to save money IS worth it.

We’re having the hottest, longest heatwave here in the UK that I can remember and I’m in my mid 40’s! For the first time ever, I went out and bought not one, but TWO fans! They have been on the highest setting for over a week and I’m already dreading the electric bills.

Cheap Activities for all the family

“Mummy, I’m BORED” must be the most dreaded phrase of the summer holidays.

Here in the UK the holidays last for 6 or 7 weeks. Most children are bored within 6 or 7 DAYS without school, so keeping them active and their minds occupied can be a challenge without spending too much money.

Each summer I keep a list of all local activities, events and attractions that are free or very low cost. That way, you’ll never get caught out when the little poppets demand entertainment.

Save on Food and Drink

With the nice whether comes a lot of opportunities for entertaining, summer BBQ’s and parties. All of this involves lots of food and drink.

For some reason here in the UK, we always seem to make twice as much food as actually needed (I have never attended a BBQ where the food has run out!) but all of this extra food and drink is expensive.

When you are on holiday, or even on day trips, the cost of food can end up being the most expensive part of the day.

Here are some ideas to keep the costs down.

Buy A Travel Pass

A travel pass or special purchase ticket can save hundreds of pounds over the year. If I visit a new city, I always make sure that I research the special passes that are available. If you are hoping to go to two or three attractions, it really is worth it.

There are also annual passes that can help you to save money if you like going back to the same attractions. This is particularly useful if you live close to the attraction.

Weigh up if you will get value out of it, or you could end up paying out money that you don’t realistically need to spend.

Buy Out of Season Goods

This tip is often completely overlooked by most people, but you can save so much money just simply buying things out of season.

For example, in winter, buy your garden furniture, clothes for your summer vacation or a new BBQ. In summer buy winter coats and boots, winter duvets, shovels or car de-icer.

Bulky items are ideal. Out of season goods are often vastly reduced in price, as the stores need to clear the space for their seasonal goods.
