There are lots of ways to make money from home, but the more I research about them, the more I realise that some of them are just…WEIRD.
These are my top 5 picks for weird (and wonderful) ways to make money from home.

Selling Smelly Shoes Online
OK, I’ve started with what is in my opinion the weirdest one of all and the reason that this article exists. I actually didn’t believe it when I first heard about this, but it was a very well-known UK blogger that first brought my attention to it and I was fascinated.
It involves selling your old, smelly shoes on Ebay – to people with a foot fetish. I think it is mainly women’s shoes (I’ve never heard of men selling their shoes) but there are £££’s to be made if you have a few pairs of worn out shoes that you are thinking of throwing out.
A word of caution if you are going to do this; ALWAYS keep yourself anonymous by starting a brand new account on Ebay so that you cannot be traced, because things could go from weird to stalker level very quickly.
My daughter sells her shoes on Gumtree or Facebook as she buys lots of shoes and never wears them or only wears them once. Even though her photos show that they are clearly brand new (some still even have the labels on) she still gets approached by strange men wanting photos of her feet in the shoes! One man wanted to come to the house and collect them (the shoes, not her feet!).
She was so freaked out that she has stopped selling her shoes on any sites that involved listing personal details such as your name (Facebook) or telephone number (Gumtree).
If you’re not freaked out by feet and can get over the ickyness of selling your smelly shoes, I say go for it! It saves them going to the landfill AND you make some money on the side.
Read an interview with a Smelly Shoes Seller on Missmanypennies.com about how she does it and how she makes money.
Personally, anything that involves feet is a big NO from me, so my smelly shoes will continue to go in the bin and I’m moving swiftly on to the next money making option.
Selling Your Trash For Cash
As well as smelly shoes, there’s probably lots of other things that you have at home that you could sell (especially in bulk) to make extra cash online. This is a good option if you have a storage area such as a garage where you can store the items until you have a large amount and then list it for sale.
Some of the things that people buy are unbelievable, things like the inside of the toilet roll (yes really!) along with anything else that could be used for arts and crafts such as coloured tissues or paper, fabric scraps, usually shaped boxes or bottles, bottle tops, soda can pulls and much more!
Have a look around and see what sort of things could be used for arts and crafts and those are the things that you should be saving up to sell online.
If you have anything that could be used at a wedding such as lace, glass jars or any sort of table decorations, you will make a killing. My sister bought so much ‘vintage’ stuff for her wedding table decorations and all of it was purchased from Ebay.
Selling Your Bodily Fluids
I regularly give blood, which you don’t get paid for here in the UK, although if they wanted to pay me I would definitely not turn them down.
But I’ve also seen that there is an option to donate blood plasma which I’d never even heard of until recently, but apparently it’s the clear liquid in our blood. It’s more complex and more inconvenient than giving blood (personally I find giving blood inconvenient enough!) so that’s probably why they pay you to do it.
If the thought of a needle puts you off, you could sell sperm to fertility clinics or faeces for medical research purposes. In some countries you can even sell breast milk, I’d never seen the option here in the UK, but sure enough a little bit of research later reveals a UK based forum with TONS of mums selling off their frozen breast milk supplies.
At first I thought it was mums buying from other mums (OK it’s a bit weird, but innocent enough) but after reading some of the posts, it definitely got weirder as it’s not only mums that are buying the milk if you get what I’m saying, so we’ll leave it there and you can fill in the blanks.
If you feel that you have a surplus of bodily fluids that you want to pass on to others to make use of, do some research online and see what is needed in your area.
Selling Your Story
If you have an interesting story to tell (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?) you can sell it to a magazine and earn up a minimum of £50 and a maximum of thousands depending on how rare/sensational the story is. There are so many monthly magazines on the market with pages to fill, they are desperate for copy so this is actually quite a sustainable way of making money on the side every month.
Think of things that have happened to you over the years that other people will either relate to or find interesting or fascinating to read, turn it into a short article (they will usually advise how many words are needed) and you’ve made yourself some extra money without even leaving the house.
If you search “Sell my story” you will find lots of help and advice of how to do this and where you can sell your story. There are even companies that specialise in these types of stories that will act as your agent and write the story for you so that you can get the maximum amount.
Don’t worry if you think you don’t have a story to tell, it doesn’t have to be a full article, you could send in a special recipe, some money saving tips, a short gardening feature, or hair or make up advice, anything that can be printed in a magazine.
If you like writing and your are willing to do a bit of research, this would be a great way to make a bit of extra cash.
Selling Things You Don’t Even Own
This is my favourite way to make money from home and don’t worry, it’s totally legit, I’m not encouraging you to steal something that isn’t yours and sell it on to someone else!
It’s all about affiliates and referral links.
Think about the things that you use every day, that you’re happy to recommend to other people because you like it so much. Well instead of recommending it for free, you can GET PAID to do that.
For example, I try to get money off vouchers for EVERY purchase I make online and one of the apps I use to do that is topcashback, I’ve been using it for many years and recommend it to friends and family, but I’ve also now started recommending it on this site and if anyone clicks on my referral link and uses the site to save money – I will get a small referral fee.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not going to be booking an exotic holiday to Bora Bora with the profits from doing this, but if a little extra side income is what you are looking for and you have an online presence (a social media profile with a few followers or a blog), you can help your friends or followers to save money AND make a few £££ yourself.
If you are a blogger but you haven’t yet monetised your site, you could be doing this on a much bigger scale. Some popular blogs make thousands a month just by referral links and affiliate marketing.
If you are new to affiliate marketing, I can highly recommend this ebook which shows you simple ways to start making money recommending products you use and like – whether you have a blog or not:
If you are completely new to this, like I was just a couple of months ago, this is the ebook that I would recommend to ease you into the affiliate marketing world. It really helps you to understand it in a very simple way.
Here are 4 reasons why I love this ebook:
- It is an easy read, there is no jargon. Any industry terms are fully explained so it is the best ebook I have found for complete beginners.
- It’s relatively short because there is absolutely no fluff! I’m a busy working mum, I haven’t got time to read a 300 page document with lots of fluffy bits to pad it out, I just want the simple facts! Elise is straight talking, which is why I love her stuff so much (I have pretty much downloaded all of her freebies from House of Brazen and they are all good!).
- At the end of the ebook you will not feel overwhelmed. Elise breaks down Affiliate Marketing in such a simplistic way that even a complete beginner will get it enough to start making sales, and it will inspire you to take action.
- Lastly, but most importantly all of the points in How to Make Your First Affiliate Sale in 24 Hours are actionable. Which is the main reason I recommend it. I have read so many blogs, ebooks, and courses that waffle on without giving any sort of action plan! Such a waste of time. This ebook will get you started very quickly.
Of course, there are much more advanced and detailed affiliate marketing products out there, but this is a fantastic start for a complete newbie and at $25 it is less than the cost of a meal out, so it won’t break the bank and if you chose the right affiliates, you should be able to make the cost back very quickly.
If you are looking to make money online, I strongly suggest that affiliate marketing should be at least a part of that plan.
The reason I say this is simple – because you won’t have to worry about making your own product which could take months of work, or sourcing products to sell which will mean you’ll have lots of outlay and won’t make any money for a while, but also because once you have set up your affiliate referrals on your blog or social media, you can pretty much forget about it. So this is as close to passive income as you can get!
If you are not new to the concept and want to take it further, I am currently working on a review for a much more detailed e-course about it called Affiliate Acceleration and it is AMAZING! Watch this space for details.
All of these are great ways of making money on the side, some of them are more sustainable than others and some may be just a bit TOO weird for your taste (have a look at how to make money doing nothing if selling smelly shoes or breast milk isn’t your thing!).
But even if you decide these ideas are not for you, I hope these examples show that if you can think of an idea, however crazy it may seem – you can guarantee that somebody somewhere is making money from it. So why not YOU?
Let me know in the comments the weirdest way that you’ve ever made money. Did you sell a dead relative’s false leg? Or rented yourself out as a date, friend or mourner for the day? Whatever it is, share it with me – the weirder the better!
